Chelsea sealed a late move for Honest Ahanor in the summer window, and the player was then loaned out to Crystal Palace. Some background on the transfer has now become clear.

The defender had a quick rise through the ranks in the Serie A. Atalanta invested a significant amount in him after he had a short, impactful spell with the Genoa first-team.

After just a single season in Bergamo where he also played the Champions League, Chelsea were convinced about a deal.

They paid €46.7m for the versatile defender, who is now also an Italy international.

As the player spends the season at Crystal Palace, his agent has spoken about the move to England.

Player proud of transfer

Beppe Riso, who represents Sandro Tonali, Davide Frattesi and several other Italians, also has Ahanor as a client. He spoke to the Colpi di Maestro podcast about several clients and was asked about the Azzurri talent.

He pointed out Ahanor’s humble background and quick rise, also revealing that the move to Chelsea was quite difficult.

Riso said – via Tuttomercatoweb: “A very difficult, long, tough operation. Another top-notch boy, humanly speaking. He brings with him the story of a boy who grew up with nothing.”

Riso also disclosed that the move left the teenager emotional, as he left Atalanta after a single season.

“When he signed for Chelsea, he hugged a friend of his and me and cried.”

Ahanor deserves patience

Playing directly for Chelsea would’ve been a big jump for Ahanor. Even if he has played at the highest level for many months, he still needs to develop physically. A loan to Crystal Palace is better, as the Eagles help younger players grow.

Profile-wise, the 18-year-old will come in very handy for the Blues in the future. He is capable of playing anywhere down the left side of defence, having also played as a wing-back in the past.  The teenager boasts impressive ability on the ball too.

Xabi Alonso has shown an inclination towards using players like that in the past. There is every chance Ahanor develops into a useful option.
