Yeimar Mosquera’s attempt to get regular senior football after leaving Aston Villa has suffered a frustrating start in Portugal.
The 21-year-old is still waiting for clearance to play for Vitória de Guimarães and could now miss a second league match.
That comes after Aston Villa had two representatives in the stands for Vitória’s opening-day defeat to Arouca. Mosquera wasn’t involved in the 1-0 loss, so Villa’s officials didn’t get the chance to see their former player in competitive action.
Portuguese newspaper O Jogo now explains exactly why.
Paperwork holding Mosquera back
Yeimar Mosquera and fellow summer signing Patrick Ouotro haven’t yet been registered for competitions.
Vitória are still waiting for documentation needed to complete the process. Specifically, the outstanding document is a criminal record certificate.
This isn’t a last-minute oversight from the Portuguese club. O Jogo says the necessary documents were requested more than 20 days ago.
The situation prevented both players from facing Arouca. That’s particularly frustrating because they had been among manager Tiago Margarido’s most-used reinforcements during pre-season.
There is therefore little indication that Mosquera’s absence has anything to do with his place in the manager’s plans.
The paperwork could arrive at any moment. However, Vitória play Sporting at Alvalade on Saturday and time is now running out.
O Jogo says Mosquera and Ouotro have not formally been ruled out of the trip to Lisbon. Even so, it is considered very difficult for the registration process to be completed in time.
Frustrating start after Aston Villa exit
Yeimar Mosquera signed a contract with Vitória until 2030 after leaving Aston Villa this summer. The Portuguese club paid €475k (£410k) to sign the Colombian defender permanently.
He had been with Villa since 2024. He spent the 2024/25 season on loan at Spanish third-tier side Real Unión.
Mosquera then returned to Aston Villa and played for their U21 side last season. He made 15 appearances and scored once.
This move to Portugal offered the defender a route towards regular senior football. His involvement throughout Vitória’s pre-season suggests Margarido intends to give him opportunities.
Instead, Mosquera has started the campaign watching from the sidelines for reasons entirely outside football.
Unless the required paperwork arrives very quickly, a difficult trip to Sporting will pass him by as well.
