Earlier this week, Djibril Cissé opened up about an anecdote that took place during his time at Sunderland, while he was on loan from Marseille.
It involved Roy Keane and some boxing gloves, and the Auxerre attacking coach has now given another interview, this time to Le Phocéen, relayed by Le10 Sport, where he explained how he ended up at the Black Cats.
The situation unfolded because of the aforementioned manager, who desperately wanted him at Sunderland and wouldn’t take no for an answer.
While Cissé wasn’t overly keen on the idea of heading back to England at first, he eventually gave in because of his unfortunate situation in the south of France under Eric Gerets.
Despite starting the campaign, he quickly found himself out of the team more and more often, and no one was giving him answers.
That’s when Sunderland and Roy Keane came knocking.
He said: “I found out that Roy Keane really wanted me and he kept calling my agent. I didn’t want to leave, but I couldn’t see how the coach was going to get me to play. So I decided to leave, but reluctantly. I was very angry with Eric because we were two close people. But he didn’t explain it to me.”
Cissé would eventually sign on loan for the season, making 38 appearances in all competitions for Sunderland, scoring 11 goals and picking up two assists.
