Fabio Paratici could return to Tottenham in the January transfer window, to try and do a deal for Destiny Udogie.
The former Tottenham director of football, now at Fiorentina, remains keen on the 23-year-old Tottenham defender to solve a crisis at left-back.
The Italian is back on the radar after attempts in the summer transfer window came to nothing.
Left-back needs
Fiorentina have an unresolved issue at left back at this moment in time, with Fabiano Parisi injured. He’s the only natural left-back in the squad at this moment in time.
That’s left the club short, with centre-backs Viery and Víctor Valdepeñas filling in the position but yet to convince anyone. There is an obvious need to resolve the problem in the January transfer window.
Corriere Fiorentino report that Paratici had wanted a left-back signing in the summer but had to abandon those plans to strengthen other areas.
His top target was Matteo Ruggeri, who ultimately joined Aston Villa. Inquiries were also loaded at Tottenham for Udogie. But they received ‘negative responses’ on that front. it’s unclear whether that was from Tottenham or the player.
January re-opening
Either way, that is a conversation which would be revisited in January. Fiorentina need a left-back as Parisi is recovering from a cruciate ligament injury.
There is no set timeline for when he will return. And the stop gap options are not working as well as might have been hoped.
There’s still time for Valdepeñas to convince, but if not, the market will be explored again. And Tottenham’s Udogie may be at the top of the list.
He has only managed one start in five Premier League games so far and spent the last one – the 3-2 defeat to Aston Villa – sat on the bench. He has started both games in the Carabao Cup, but all indications are that he’s not in Roberto de Zerbi’s plans.
That could open the door to a deal and Paratici may explore it, after asking questions in the summer transfer window.
