The glory days of Everton and James Rodriguez appear to be far in the past, as the Colombian is joining Serie B side Avellino.
Marca report that the former Everton and Real Madrid man is in talks with the Italian side as he looks for his latest adventure.
They state that the midfielder is in very advanced negotiations with the Colombian icon. He is currently a free agent, and both parties are very close reaching an agreement.
Serie B next
Avellino are currently managed by Italian legend Alessandro Nesta. He has held talks with the former Everton man and they’ve both made their positions very clear. Now they are trying to make the numbers work. But an announcement could be made soon.
Rodriguez is currently a free agent after leaving MLS side Montreal Impact. Reports have linked him with various teams over the course of the summer. Now he could be set to move to Italy with Avellino as they seek to secure promotion to Serie A.
Nesta’s side currently sit in fifth position, three points behind leaders Palermo. The hope is that a big signing like Rodriguez could be a boost to their promotion hopes.
Last chance at revival
It would represent an interesting step for the 35-year-old, though. His career now appears to be winding down from the previous highs of Porto, Monaco, Real Madrid and even Bayern Munich.
Everton can be thrown into that too. His short one-year spell there will not be forgotten any time soon by the Blue side of Merseyside. Indeed, his time under Carlo Ancelotti in particular, when he managed six goals and nine assist in 26 games, was perhaps among the best of his career.
Now, just five years later, he’s on his way to Italy and Serie B in the hope of a last revival under an Italian legend.
