AS Roma are preparing for a major attacking signing and this can come after a big sale to Aston Villa.
The exit in question is that of Matias Soule, after the start to 2026 wasn’t great for him. Due to injuries, he contributed to just one goal in Serie A.
Roma now believe he hasn’t developed as well as he should have. They spent €26m to sign him in 2024 and expected him to become a much more important player for them.
This hasn’t happened, with Sport Witness having covered Aston Villa’s initial contact in recent weeks.
Now, attempts to sell the Argentine are intensifying.
Greenwood deal sought
Today’s Corriere della Sera covers the Giallorossi’s plans for the summer.
They want to improve their attack and selling Soule is one way to do that. His exit will hand Roma enough funds to sign Mason Greenwood.
Corriere della Sera confirm Aston Villa’s interest in the versatile attacker. Unai Emery’s side need €40m to sign him and that is the amount which can settle Roma’s accounts with UEFA FFP.
More than that, it will hand them the impetus to sign Greenwood. Marseille need to execute sales by the end of June for their own financial reasons. To sell the Englishman, they want a fee of €50m plus bonuses of €5m.
That is why Roma may be in a hurry to sell Soule. This can hand Aston Villa the chance to seal a move for the 23-year-old.
Emery’s side should make offer
Soule can play in a variety of positions in attack. He can also operate in the number ten role, having played on either flanks.
In the first-half of the season, he showed he can be a threatening presence around the box. He thrives on attacking spaces and Emery’s side relies a lot on that aspect.
This will make him an important signing. He is also at the right age and there is every chance he grows further.
Roma seem desperate and there is a good possibility they can sell for less. Aston Villa should certainly go in lower than the €40m desired.
