Coventry City have made an attempt to sign Marseille’s Angel Gomes, after his loan spell at Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Towards the end of the winter market, Wolves signed the midfielder on loan, and he made 12 league appearances. This includes seven league starts and one more in the FA Cup. He failed to score or assist for the Molineux club.

Wolves reportedly had a €7m purchase option. In April, Sport Witness relayed news of the English club not wanting to exercise clause, after his disappointing spell. Their relegation to the Championship would have also been a factor.

Coventry City are considering signing the London-born player this summer, according to Saturday’s print edition of L’Equipe.

The Ligue 1 side have offloaded a few players and are in the process of further trimming their squad. They are going through financial difficulties and need this to lower their wage bill.

Angel Gomes and Pierre-Emile Højbjerg are the two Marseille players leaning towards the Premier League.

Earlier today, we covered Newcastle United’s interest in the Dane, and the newspaper now backs it up.

Coventry City can offer escape route

Bruno Génésio left Angel Gomes out of his core plans in the latter’s final year at Lille. The manager is now at Marseille and has used the player during pre-season. However, he doesn’t appear to have a major role under Génésio next season.

After a disappointing spell at Wolves, the 25-year-old is looking for another opportunity in the Premier League.

Frank Lampard’s side have come forward and asked about the former Manchester United man. The French club, who are looking to offload him, won’t stand in his way if Coventry City were to make a concrete push.

There’s no indication if the newly promoted Premier League side plan to advance further after making initial contact.
