West Ham United’s proposed deal for Ajax striker Brian Brobbey would not be a good one for the Dutch club.

That’s according to journalist Valentijn Driessen, via Ajax Fanatics, who also doesn’t believe it was pure coincidence that the striker was in London last week.

Brobbey has been linked with a move to West Ham over the last week, with it reported on Friday that they had made an initial bid for him. The Hammers are desperate to add a striker to their squad after losing Niklas Füllkrug and Michail Antonio to injuries.

Several reports since have made it clear that Brobbey is keen on the move and his agent later confirmed that he had travelled to London. This only fuelled the West Ham rumours further.

A deal has not been struck with Ajax as yet, though, and Driessen does not believe they should be looking to do one with West Ham either.

“I don’t think it’s a good deal,” he said.

“I would love to see Brobbey succeed at Ajax. I think that would be much more important than €25-30m If he succeeds at Ajax and Ajax were to play in the Champions League next year, he would be worth a multiple of that amount.

“You can see that with (Santiago) Giménez, his market value is going up all the time now. Brobbey or Giménez, you can fight about who you think is better, but it is not the case that Brobbey is much worse that he yields half of Giménez.

“I would not think it is good for Ajax. And also, from the point of view that they brought him back for a lot of money, a product from their own academy, did well last year, not this year. What is going on there, that this boy is not scoring goals?”

If Brobbey is to head to the London Stadium, a deal will have to be struck between West Ham and Ajax first.

That does not appear on the cards as yet, with the Dutch side looking to secure as big a sum as possible and West Ham limited by PSR in this window.

The Hammers have, though, reportedly struck a deal with the striker, offering him as much as €100,000-a-week to join them before the window closes on February 3rd.

That’s a significant sum of money to say the least and it’s been reported that Brobbey is keen to make the switch, even travelling to London last week for an unknown reason. Driessen, though, believes there is no mystery about that trip.

“That would have been a complete coincidence. I haven’t heard that he was sitting in a stand somewhere,” he said.

“He would have had to be sitting in the stands at Tottenham, because I think West Ham was playing away. No further developments yet. Maybe it will still work out, but the first offer seems to have been rejected,” he added.
