Last month, we covered claims from Portugal that Chelsea are closely following Sporting star Viktor Gyökeres and his €100m release clause doesn’t scare them.
Chelsea are willing to take further steps to try and sign the striker this month if a report from today’s Record is to be believed.
The 25-year-old joined the Lions from Coventry City last summer and has starred this season, scoring 20 goals and registering 10 assists from 24 games. His form has caught the attention of several clubs, including the Blues.
It’s claimed Chelsea have offered a deal worth €85m for the Sweden international and that includes €80m fixed fee plus €5m in bonuses. However, this was turned down by the Portuguese club.
The newspaper say this response wasn’t surprising since Sporting manager Rúben Amorim wants to retain his frontman.
Record add Chelsea’s €85m offer is relatively close to Gyökeres’ €100m clause and therefore, this may leave the door open for Mauricio Pochettino’s side to return with an improved bid before the January window closes.
That point is made strongly, and it feels like Chelsea returning with a different offer is half expected.
The Swede, for his part, has left the decision to Sporting on whether or not to leave this month, but his priority has been to stay.
It’ll be interesting to see what both Gyökeres and the Portuguese club will do if Chelsea make a bigger offer.
