When Werder Bremen were pushing to get Isaac Schmidt on loan in the summer, there was some curious reporting in Germany. The Leeds United fullback would only be seen as a rotation option and wasn’t expected to be a regular starter.

At 25-years-of-age and going on a straight loan, it didn’t appear to be a great plan. Despite that, Schmidt was keen and pushed at Leeds United for the move to go through.

He’d had less than an hour of football until the weekend, when the warm glow of luck shined in his direction. After 45 minutes, Felix Agu had to come off injured, and Schmidt got the second half.

Bild now report Agu has been ‘hit hard’ by injury. The 26-year-old has ‘torn the syndesmosis ligament in his left ankle’. Werder Bremen have officially said he’s out for several months.

The German newspaper report, according to their own information, that Agu is out for three to four months. Now, Schmidt is set to be first choice for the coming months.

Another injured Werder Bremen defender who Leeds United fans will know is Maximilian Wöber. He’s also on loan from Elland Road but is out long term.

Isaac Schmidt getting more game time may well help Leeds United eventually sell him.
