Birmingham City are stepping up their efforts to sign Aarón Escandell, after making an initial approach.
On Thursday, Sport Witness covered claims from Spain that the Blues are very keen on the Real Oviedo goalkeeper and have contacted him.
Last season, Birmingham City had Brighton & Hove Albion loanee James Beadle as their No.1, with Ryan Allsop as his backup.
Beadle has returned to The Amex, leaving Chris Davies with Allsop and Bradley Mayo as his two stoppers.
Birmingham City interest backed up
Aarón Escandell has been Real Oviedo’s No.1 since joining them for free in 2024.
Last season, he kept 10 clean sheets and conceded 56 goals from 36 La Liga matches, but Real Oviedo dropped to the second division.
The stopper is confident the club will soon return to the top flight. El Desmarque relays his comments and also backs up Birmingham City’s interest.
“We will return Oviedo to La Liga, and I have that firmly in my sights. I think it’s the main objective,” he said.
Birmingham City making advances
Real Oviedo will have to sort out the goalkeeper’s situation. He has less than a year left on a contract which includes a €5m release clause. Transfermakrt value him at €3m.
The Segunda División side have doubts about his continuity, mainly because of the English club’s interest.
El Desmarque claims Aarón Escandell has a ‘significant offer’ from the Championship side, without a mention of the details.
All indications suggest Birmingham City are preparing to pay €5m clause and they only have to convince the 30-year-old before triggering the clause.
He wasn’t in the squad for the friendly against Al-Qadsiah earlier this week. This ‘casts doubt on his potential departure’ even though Real Oviedo cited a minor injury as the reason for his absence.
Escandell spent four years between 2008 and 2012 at Valencia’s academy. Los Ches are now showing interest in bringing him back.
The outlet claims this possibility is remote, and he’s moving away from Valencia because of the competition from Birmingham City.
