Birmingham City have made an approach to sign Real Oviedo goalkeeper Aarón Escandell this summer.
That’s according to Radio Televisión del Principado de Asturias, who cover Birmingham City’s interest when discussing some of Real Oviedo’s potential transfers.
Escandell gets a mention as his future with the Spanish club remains uncertain, following their relegation from La Liga.
Birmingham City keen on Spaniard
The 30-year-old joined Real Oviedo for free in 2024, after a season at UD Las Palmas. He was their first-choice stopper, managing 26 clean sheets and conceding 100 goals from 81 matches.
RTPA report the Spaniard could leave the Segunda División side and is unlikely to be short of options.
Although several clubs are keen, only Chris Davies’ side get a mention, and they are ‘very interested’ in signing him.
In fact, Birmingham City have already started contact with Aarón Escandell. He has less than a year left on his contract, and Transfermarkt value him at €3m. The Blues may have to pay more than that he has a €5m release clause.
In January, the English club beat Ajax to sign Carlos Vicente from Deportivo Alavés for a reported fee of around €8m. RTPA points that out to suggest Birmingham City wouldn’t struggle to pay €5m.
Real Oviedo are likely to sell this summer, to make profit and also avoid losing him for free in 2027.
Why Birmingham City need new goalkeeper
Last season, Chris Davies started with Ryan Allsop as his No.1. He kept two clean sheets and conceded 15 goals from 11 Championship matches and then lost his place to James Beadle.
He arrived on loan from Brighton & Hove Albion and was a regular at St. Andrew’s. Beadle had eight clean sheets and let in 45 goals from 35 league matches.
Beadle has returned to The Amex, leaving Birmingham City with Allsop and 21-year-old Bradley Mayo. Therefore, it’s no surprise if they are looking for a new goalkeeper.
Aarón Escandell could be the new No.1 or at least compete with Allsop for the starting spot if the Blues were to sign him.
