On June 8th, multiple claims from Spain stated that Sevilla believe that Aston Villa are behind Monchi’s request to leave the club and the sporting director is ‘seduced’ by the idea of joining the Premier League side.
Two days later, ABC Sevilla reported the Villans will know by Monday whether they can bring the 54-year-old to Villa Park after making a ‘very strong financial’ offer.
Today’s ABC Sevilla states Aston Villa or any other club that want to hire the Spaniard must pay the clause in his contract.
Sevilla are using this as a weapon to try to retain him while at the same time also assess whether to keep a ‘disgruntled worker’ at the club.
At the beginning of last weekend, the director was ‘more outside than inside’ of Sevilla. The English club ‘discard the idea’ of paying his clause and this could end up upsetting his plans to leave the Andalusian club.
The newspaper states Sevilla need an answer from Monchi, likely in the next few hours.
Marca also state the Europa League winners hope to have a definitive answer from Monchi on Monday.
It’s claimed Aston Villa’s attempt has been ‘somewhat cold’ after they learnt a clause has to be paid to take the Spaniard. They ‘wanted to incorporate’ Monchi as their new director of football without paying a fee.
Meanwhile, Sevilla president José Castro has told Marca that he hopes Monchi continues at the club.
“He has not been given time to digest the victory, it has been a few days, and this issue has come up. What I can say is that Monchi has a contract with Sevilla and is working on planning. I cannot say anything else about Monchi at this moment. We hope and wish that you continue with us,” he said.
