Mikel Arteta believes that Arsenal would have won a major title ‘in normal circumstances’ as questions about their lack of trophies continue.

The Spanish coach has an interview published with Mundo Deportivo today in which he admits he believes Arsenal have been stopped from winning a major title by situations he hasn’t got to grips with yet.

The Gunners are once again in the Premier League title race this season, sitting second and six points behind Liverpool after 23 games. Arne Slot’s side have a game in hand.

At this moment in time, it appears Liverpool will run out as champions after a superb campaign that has seen them win 16 games to date and lose just once.

That would mean a third straight year of disappointment for Arsenal, who may consider this campaign a missed opportunity after finishing second behind Manchester City in the last two campaigns.

The fall-off from Pep Guardiola’s side this season has opened the door for a new champion, but Arsenal appear to have missed their opportunity. That’s led to plenty of criticism and questions whether Arteta is the man to lead the club to the trophies they want.

He, though, thinks Arsenal would have already won plenty of those trophies if the circumstances had been normal.

“In this club it is non-negotiable to be aspiring to win the large titles,” he said.

“With the stability that the squad is showing at the performance level, in other normal circumstances we would be with some big title in the hands, but the reality is not.

“So, we are missing something and that is where we have to look for that margin to be able to do what we are all looking forward to, which is to make a jump and win the large titles.”
