Freshly relegated to the Championship, the mass exodus from Sunderland, starting with David Moyes and Jermain Defoe, is now well underway.

Lamine Koné and Papa Djilobodji are two others very likely to jump ship in the coming months, and it now seems Wahbi Khazri is keen to follow suit.

The Tunisian forward, who wasn’t exactly one of the Scottish manager’s favourites last season, lived a fairly average campaign last year, scoring just the one goal and picking up one assist in 22 appearances.

Still, the 26-year-old, if possible, would like to return to the Premier League, as he revealed to L’Equipe on Wednesday.

He said: “Before he got sacked on Sunday, Moyes clearly told me I could leave. That’s great, because I don’t see myself staying. I don’t want to play in the Championship. I have three years left on my deal, and my transfer away would suit everyone.”

Preferring a stay in England, the Tunisia international also isn’t against a return to France, even if the last day of the season didn’t exactly thrill him.

However, if Marseille came knocking…

He explained: “Ah, if Marseille call me… They’re a super club with a super stadium and super fans. I’d have to listen to what they offer, just like I did at Bordeaux. However, that’s not in the pipeline at the moment. I need to be patient, but I want to play football.”

For someone who hasn’t exactly set the league alight, Khazri seems confident he can avoid playing in the Championship next year.

If his options are PSG, Monaco, Marseille and Premier League clubs, however, he might need to very patient indeed.
