Manchester United striker Wout Weghorst has admitted the only way he can silence the doubters is to score goals at the club.

Weghorst joined United on loan from Burnley until the end of the season earlier this month, breaking a loan deal at Besiktas in order to do so.

He has arrived at Old Trafford to replace Cristiano Ronaldo, whose departure before the World Cup had left a glaring hole in Manchester United’s forward line.

The move has been questioned thoroughly from all corners, with many doubting if Weghorst is good enough to be the leading man for Manchester United this season given how badly he struggled at Burnley last season.

That short stint in the Premier League was not a successful one by any means and the striker had hardly been shining in Turkey, although he did manage to make an impression at the World Cup with the Netherlands.

It seems he is more than aware of his doubters, and admits the only way to dispel them is to score the goals to help Manchester United achieve their aims this season.

“In the end, it’s very simple. As a striker you are judged by goals,” he told Algemeen Dagblad.

“He (Erik ten Hag) indicated that attacking reinforcements were desirable. A striker, a number 9. Such a type was sought to add to the selection. And then it’s simple. The best plays. I have to force it to make minutes.

“In my career I have always done one thing: score goals. We’ve had two games now. If I start missing big chances, then I have to start worrying. But I’m confident I can do it and I’ll be fine.

“The coach saw that I was ready. Nice to enforce that confidence from the start.

“It is fantastic to be here. The atmosphere, the away fans, the game that waves up and down. Wonderful. I’ve been here for over a week now. It’s going well.

“Of course (I want to stay), but first I have to make sure I can be of value to the team and this club.”
