Leeds United are reportedly one of the many clubs who are in the race for the Alavés winger Ibai Gómez, and the story keeps popping up in the Spanish media.

It’s AS who backs it up today, as they have a story about the efforts the La Liga club are planning to help them keep the player in their squad.

Gómez’s contract with Alavés is expiring at the end of the season, so it’s a crucial time to decide what will they do about his situation.

The idea pointed out by AS is to sign Marcos Llorente from Real Madrid. As he’s Gómez’s friend, his arrival would help to convince the 29-year-old to stay at the club, even because the squad would be strengthened with the signing, and could fight for a Europa League spot.

In case it doesn’t happen, then Alavés would sell Gómez ‘as soon as possible’ so he doesn’t walk for free at the end of the season. And that’s where Leeds United’s competition is pointed out, as Athletic Club Bilbao, Real Sociedad, Eibar and Celta would all be interested in him as well.

AS doesn’t say how much Alavés demand for the winger in January, but it doesn’t really sound like it would be a lot. He has three goals and two assists in 13 appearances this season.

With Leeds being the only club from abroad, maybe Gómez has a clear choice to stay in Spain or take up a Yorkshire adventure.
