Arne Slot needs to avoid signing too many Dutchmen for Liverpool this summer, lest he create cliques at Anfield.
That’s according to former midfielder Wesley Sneijder, who has warned the incoming Liverpool manager after experiencing the problem at Real Madrid.
Slot is the man Liverpool have chosen to replace Jurgen Klopp this summer and they made their first move for him last week, with a deal between the two parties agreed not long after.
His arrival seems likely to kickstart something of a revolution at Anfield this summer, with the returning Michael Edwards thought to be planning an overhaul of the squad.
Several Feyenoord players have already been linked with a move and, indeed, there has been a growing Dutch theme to Liverpool transfer rumours since it became clear he was the favourite for the job.
The current squad already has several Dutchmen in it, with Virgil van Dijk leading the way and the likes of Ryan Gravenberch and Cody Gakpo also in the mix.
Adding to that group would make sense given Slot’s impending arrival but Sneijder has warned against it, after seeing the negatives at Real Madrid.
“I would be careful with that, with getting too many Dutchmen,” he said.
“I experienced that at Madrid. When I came, only Ruud van Nistelrooy, Royston Drenthe and Arjen Robben were there. And the following year Klaas-Jan Huntelaar and Rafael van der Vaart joined them.
“If the four of us play football somewhere, we’re not going to talk Spanish to each other, you keep talking in your mother tongue anyway. You shouldn’t start attracting too many Dutch people to you.”
