Algeria are ready to open the door again for Manchester City‘s Rayan Aït-Nouri as long as he fulfils two key conditions set by their football association.
The left-back hasn’t enjoyed a good run since swapping Wolverhampton Wanderers for the Citizens in 2025.
Last season, Pep Guardiola favoured Nico O’Reilly ahead of the 25-year-old as his first choice left-back. That meant the latter settled for a backup role at Manchester City.
In the summer, the Premier League side appointed Enzo Maresca as Guardiola’s successor and Aït-Nouri’s situation has become worse this season. He played 105 minutes from two matches and only 15 were in the league.
Manchester City player’s drama with NT
The fullback wanted regular minutes with Algeria during the last international break. However, he had to leave the national team camp early, after creating a drama in their victory over Zambia.
Rayan Aït-Nouri was unhappy when manager Brahim Hemdani started Brighton & Hove Albion’s Jaouen Hadjam instead of him. The latter opened the scoring before Zambia netted the equaliser in the second half. The Fennecs regained the lead before securing a 3-1 win.
Hemdani initially wanted to bring on the Manchester City player, only to change his mind after Zambia’s equaliser. The Manchester City player then refused to leave the bench after his side made it 2-1. A few days later, the 25-year-old withdrew from the squad.
Last week, the manager said he hasn’t decided on whether the fullback can play again for Algeria.
What Manchester City man has to do
Rayan Aït-Nouri can represent his country again and WinWin states he has to fulfil key conditions.
The first is for him to issue an apology to his teammates, Brahim Hemdani and Algeria’s coaching staff. The latter, led by the manager, have no intention of further punishing him. Rayan Aït-Nouri, for his part, is ready to apologise for his behaviour in September.
Algeria also want the defender to ‘regain his competitive form’ at Manchester City and this is the second condition. In short, the national team want him to feature regularly under Enzo Maresca to improve his chances of representing his country.
Aït-Nouri will find it difficult to enjoy regular minutes at the Etihad as long as Nico O’Reilly is available for selection. He will have to find a way to convinces Maresca to change his mind. In short, the manager’s decision remains vital.
These are the two key conditions for the defender to end his crisis with the national team.
If the situation at Manchester City doesn’t improve, there’s a good chance for the Algeria international to leave in January. He recently changed agents, which is likely a sign.
