PSG will be hurting.
They thought they had Frenkie de Jong, even the Catalan media had given up last week on Barcelona’s chances of signing the player.
However, a late effort from Josep Maria Bartomeu changed everything, and the Barca president managed to convince the Dutchman.
There’s the chance Ajax have played this one perfectly. Pushing information to De Telegraaf, who have great contacts with the Eredivisie club, and pressuring Barcelona into eventually paying more than would have been case had PSG and Manchester City not been involved.
A meeting with PSG in Amsterdam was photographed and led to claims of a done deal, and that cranked things right up.
It’ll sting for PSG, so to help ease the pain, De Telegraaf say the French club have already contacted Ajax about signing Matthijs de Ligt, they’re also said to be keen on Donny van de Beek.
Interest from Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Manchester City and Juventus is also cited, and this morning we covered a report from Spanish newspaper Sport who believe Pep Guardiola’s club are edging towards signing the player.
De Telegraaf, however, believe PSG and Juve are best placed, with City and Bayern in ‘the second row’. The negative points for the Manchester club are said to be FFP (which surely should apply to PSG too) and that Guardiola may not make De Ligt an undisputed starter.
