Saul Niguez’s move to Chelsea is turning into something of a disaster.

The 27-year-old pushed to leave Atletico Madrid throughout the summer window, feeling he needed a new experience elsewhere. Despite links throughout the window, the Spaniard had to wait until the end of the market, when the Blues agreed a loan deal.

Since then, Saul has made just three appearances in the Premier League under Thomas Tuchel. Indeed, he’s played more than twice as many minutes in La Liga this season as he has in the league for Chelsea.

Saul’s reasons behind wanting to leave Atletico related to Diego Simeone using him as something of a utility player, and often in a wide position. Wanting to pursue his career in the middle of the park, the footballer decided it would be better to go elsewhere.

That’s why Mundo Deportivo report that Tuchel saying Saul could provide cover for Ben Chilwell, and help give Marcos Alonso some rest, is the ‘worst possible news’ for the player.

They state Tuchel ‘promised him prominence’ in the middle of the pitch, and that clearly hasn’t happened. Such claims about the Chelsea manager wouldn’t fit with earlier stories saying he hadn’t asked for the signing.

Either way, the move isn’t working out, although there’s still time for things to change.
