Wolverhampton Wanderers loanee Gonçalo Guedes is set to have surgery.

The procedure was today announced by Benfica, who on their official website say the player ‘has an injury to his left knee, affecting the meniscus, which needs surgical treatment, to be held in the next few days’.

For now, it’s unclear how long Guedes will be sidelined for, and it’s likely that Saturday’s newspapers in Portugal will have a more accurate forecast about that.

The Wolves loanee had been subbed off during Benfica’s game against Vizela a couple of weeks ago. At the time, the local media only claimed he’d be out of last weekend’s match against Famalicão, and would be doubtful for this week’s game versus Club Brugge.

Well, Guedes ended up missing both, despite being on the bench on Tuesday, and now Benfica come up with the worst news, meaning he could probably miss the rest of the season at the club.

The forward is loaned by Wolves until the end of the season only. Since joining the Eagles in the January transfer window, he had two goals in eight appearances, and there’s no information on Benfica’s intention to make that a permanent deal.
