West Ham United defender Angelo Ogbonna has shared his disappointment at not being a part of Italy’s squad for Euro 2020.
The defender enjoyed a solid campaign with West Ham this year, making 28 appearances in the Premier League in total.
He was a regular for a side that enjoyed a strong campaign under David Moyes, challenging for a Champions League place and eventually securing Europa League football.
That was not enough to get him into the Italy squad for this summer’s tournament, though, with Roberto Mancini instead going with Giorgio Chiellini, Leonardo Bonucci, Alessandro Bastoni, Rafael Toloi and Francesco Acerbi as his centre back options.
Ogbonna wishes he had been a part of it, though, and shared his disappointment at missing out with Radio Kiss Kiss Napoli.
“I am very sad and embittered for not being called up to the national team,” Mondo Napoli report the West Ham man saying.
“I don’t take it out on Mancini, and I thought it was the Premier League that was underestimated for the call-ups.
“But looking at the situation of my other companions who stayed at home, I realised that this is not the case. My injuries probably influenced the choice of the coach.
“I’m sorry, but as a good Italian, I continue to follow our national team. We are doing very well, and I am sure that even when the matches get tougher, we will be able to get away with it.”
