West Ham United have joined the race for Fenerbahçe centre back Attila Szalai but may need to move quickly to get him before Spanish side Sevilla.

That’s according to A Spor, who say Sevilla chief Monchi has made the defender a target for the summer transfer window.

Szalai has been in impressive form for Fenerbahçe this season, and that has earned him attention around Europe, particularly in England, where Newcastle, Aston Villa and Leicester have all been named as suitors.

West Ham and Sevilla have now been added to that list, with A Spor stating that the Spanish club are in ‘elbow contact’ with English sides – we’re reading that as competing with them for his signature.

Either way, A Spor explain that Sevilla are ‘preparing to sit down’ with Fenerbahçe to discuss a move at the end of the season.

Szalai is reportedly being ‘closely followed’ by their director of football, Monchi, who has already put him among his potential additions for the summer and submitted a report on him to his superior.

Fenerbahçe, for their part, are open to a sale but want to wait until after the European Championships because Szalai’s country Hungary are in a group with Portugal, Germany and France.

That could see him shine on the international stage and increase his value, with the Turkish club having already set a minimum asking price of €25m on his head.
