As West Ham fans will be painfully aware, André Ayew, their club-record signing, is still out with a thigh injury.
Suffering the setback 35 minutes into the opening day of the season in a 2-1 loss to Chelsea, the Ghana international is expected to return for Slaven Bilic’s side sometime in November.
Speaking to Nhyira FM, and relayed by GhanaWeb, Winfried Kwaku Osei, the Executive Committee Member of the Ghana FA, explained the reasoning for calling up the West Ham star.
He said: “It was a technical decision, the decision to put him on the bench was purely a technical one. He was on the bench, the match commissioner didn’t question it so we left him there.
“So obviously, a member of the technical staff was substituted for him to be on the team sheet. He wasn’t put there as a player.”
This took place during the 0-0 draw against Uganda, as Ghana dropped two obtainable points as they started their campaign to qualify for the 2018 World Cup, set to take place in Russia.
Their next qualifier, one Ayew should, in theory, be back for as a player, will take place on the 13th of November against Egypt.
