When, in the summer, the Pau Lopez to Tottenham saga started, it didn’t seem to make a great deal of sense for Espanyol. Here was a 22 year old goalkeeper, with an impressive amount of first team experience, being packed off as Espanyol looked for a veteran to take his place.

Mauricio Pochettino provided the home for Pau Lopez, and whilst the young Spaniard’s spell at the club, whether his loan turns permanent or not, is curious, Diego Lopez’s success is clear.

Pau Lopez isn’t going to get ahead of Hugo Lloris at Tottenham in the foreseeable future, and likely not Michel Vorm either, but the switch has worked for Espanyol.

Diego Lopez has just broken the record for not conceding a goal for Espanyol, 550 minutes. Sporting Gijon brought it to an end, but there’s no denying the 35 year old is having a great season so far, and has repaid all the faith shown in him.

It doesn’t bode well for Pau Lopez if he does return to Espanyol, in the case Pochettino decides not to make the loan move permanent. If Tottenham don’t keep Pau Lopez long term, they’d need to financially compensate Espanyol, but at a much lower amount than the transfer fee.
