It’s fair to say John Stones hasn’t had a wonderful start to his first season at Manchester City. The England international has found a huge fan in Pep Guardiola, and is encouraged to play a game which is natural to him. The defensive side of his game has let Stones down on occasion, and, being a defender, that’s an area he needs to improve.

Spanish newspaper Marca drag Stones, and Chelsea’s David Luiz, into an article about Sergio Ramos. The Real Madrid captain has recently been displaying his all action hero form, and scoring crucial goals, as well as putting in good defensive displays.

Marca believe he’s the best in the world, but last time Ramos got a renewal he had to use Manchester United to do so. Then managed by Louis van Gaal, Manchester United went on a long and fruitless pursuit of Ramos, with Edward Woodward truly believing he could get the player to Old Trafford.

Predictably, Ramos had little intention of really leaving Madrid, and was able to use Manchester United to get a pay rise. Woodward was left with egg on his face, and Van Gaal was left a top defender short.

They claim that John Stones, David Luiz and Thiago Silva are all paid ‘much more’ than Ramos. That would seem absurd, if true, and Marca clearly believe it is the case.

Whilst it may be fathomable, yet still wrong, with Thiago Silva, given he’s almost compensated to play in Ligue 1, and similar could be said for Luiz carrying his wage to Chelsea, if it’s correct that Stones earns more at Manchester City than Ramos does at Real Madrid then the Premier League is eating itself.
