Tottenham Hotspur are yet to give their manager, Antonio Conte, a new player in the January window, but have been successful in retaining captain Hugo Lloris beyond this season.
A week ago, the goalkeeper signed a new deal that will keep him at the north London club until 2024.
Despite the 35-year-old renewing the contract, Spurs are looking at another keeper. As per Kicker, via Bild, the Premier League side ‘show interest’ in Bayern Munich’s Alexander Nübel.
He was the second-choice custodian for the Bavarian club last season, behind Manuel Neuer, so, in search for more game time, Nübel joined AS Monaco on a two-year loan deal last summer, but the Bundesliga winners retain an option to cut short his stay next summer.
Nübel has been a regular for the Ligue 1 side this season, where he has made 30 appearances in all competitions, conceding 32 goals and keeping eight clean sheets in the process.
At Monaco, he has ‘returned to his old strength’ and is ‘fighting’ to regain the best form he had when he was at Schalke. The 25-year-old’s displays for the French club has seen Spurs ‘become aware of the German’.
Neuer is now close to signing a new deal at the Allianz Arena. So, there is a small chance of his compatriot returning to Bayern after his loan spell with the Ligue 1 side.
‘What is clear’ is that Nübel could be sold after this season, if the Bayern star signs an extension.
Should the Bayern owned player join Spurs, he will have to compete with Lloris for a place in the starting lineup.
The report suggests ‘the Frenchman won’t be ousted that easily’, meaning Nübel will have to fight to get ahead of the World Cup winner.
His agent, Stefan Backs, told Kicker he is in having regular talks with the German club’s leaders.
“I am in constant contact with Bayern Munich. I know how the sporting management think and plan there,” Backs said.
