Jan Vertonghen sounds like he’d very much appreciate if Mauricio Pochettino would give Tottenham players a few more breaks.

Earlier this week in an interview about his love of watching cycling competitions, the defender explained how it’s hard to be able to attend events in person because of his football commitments.

Making sure to say that footballers generally have a good life and usually finish training by around 3pm, Vertonghen added: “The negative point is that we rarely have several days off in a row. Guardiola sometimes offers breaks of 4-5 days to his players but our coach is someone who wants to train hard and a lot.”

Now he’s spoken again and is glad of the international break he’s been able to enjoy. Roberto Martinez only planned one friendly for the current break, with most countries going for two, so his players could have a little extra free time.

Quoted by Belgian newspaper DH, Vertonghen has found that to be a big plus: “At Tottenham, the training is pretty strong, it’s a good thing because we have good results, but physically and mentally, the Premier League is very trying, especially since there’s no real break. It was good to have a little break, it went well and I hope it will serve as a boost for the end of the season.”

Maybe Pochettino can take a hint, go the way of Pep Guardiola, and give his Tottenham players a couple of breaks during the season.
