With no football to play, footballers are a bit bored these days, and that’s when they start talking to the press about certain things, like their future.
That’s what Toby Alderweireld did on Monday evening when Sporza in Belgium got him to agree to take part in a Facebook Live chat.
The Tottenham defender is contracted to the London club until 2023, meaning he’ll be 34 when it expires; a time he sees as ideal for a return to his home country.
He said: “I am thinking about returning to Belgium afterwards. Especially for my children, who will be three and give then. My oldest child will then go to primary school and I want to give her a normal childhood. I want to send her to a school for six years without her having to change and travel”.
Unless you are a Ryan Giggs or a Harry Kane, stability has always been an issue in footballers’ lives, which is why Alderweireld decided to renew at Tottenham instead of moving to another club, whether it be in England or abroad.
And for when the time comes to play football in Belgium again, he has an idea of where he’d like to continue his career.
He added: “I trained at Germinal Ekeren and Beerschot. I am a Beerschot supporter, but I am also a huge fan of Antwerp football as a whole. I am happy that Antwerp teams are starting to mean something in Belgium”.
Royal Antwerp are currently fourth in the Jupiler Pro League, Belgium’s top division, while Beerschot are in the tier below, the Proximus League, and sit fifth.
Since Alderweireld joined Tottenham in 2015, he has made 195 appearances, scored seven goals and assisted another five.
