Hamburg are trying to do the right thing over Jann-Fiete Arp. The 18 year old striker is enjoying a breakthrough year at the Bundesliga club, and has been linked to clubs around Europe… with Tottenham repeatedly popping up.
Considering Hamburg have a knack of messing up anything which can be messed up, there’s a determination at the club that this time they’ll get things right. Although it’s accepted Arp won’t be likely to stay long term if he continues his progress, there’s a willingness from HSV to be protected with a better contract.
The Bundesliga club want to give Arp a pay rise and extend his deal until 2023, report SportBild, with the current contract ending in June 2019. That would allow Hamburg to demand a better fee if and when clubs come calling.
SportBild say Tottenham have him ‘in view’, and say the same for Manchester City and Chelsea. In November, the same German magazine said Tottenham are one of a number of clubs to have made some sort of contact over a future signing.
It’s almost certainly best to leave Arp where he is until at least the end of the season, even if HSV manage to get a renewal. There’s every chance the club, second to bottom of the Bundesliga, could be relegated and that would lay the ground for a value Tottenham transfer, potentially even loaning the player back.
A situation, and a player, to keep an eye on.
