Currently 16th in the Premier League with 23 points, Brighton & Hove Albion will already be thinking about the best way for them to get the next 17 in order to reach the magic 40 points mark.

Well, according to Le10 Sport, the Seagulls are thinking about investing in a new defensive midfielder, as the French website claim Chris Hughton’s side made an approach about AS Roma’s Maxime Gonalons.

The former Lyon captain, who joined the Serie A outfit last summer, is said to have turned down the approach from the Premier League side, explaining to them he wasn’t ready to leave Rome just yet.

Brighton weren’t the only ones said to be after him, with a number of Ligue 1 clubs also expressing an interest in his services, but it seems an exit was never the plan just six months after his arrival.

This comes off the back of a relatively slow start to the season for Gonalons, who has only made seven league appearances for Roma so far.

Brighton weren’t being too presumptuous in wanting to offer him more game time, but, for now, he seems happy.
