Injured during pre-season, Romain Perraud only got his first start of the season for Southampton against Chelsea.

It went rather well, some might say, with the Frenchman impacting the game in the best possible way, as he helped the Saints overcome their opponents in a 2-1 win by assisting Adam Armstrong for the winner.

He’s now on holiday for a bit during the international break, allowing him to return to his home town of Toulouse, describing it as a ‘real breath of fresh air’ during a chat with La Dépêche du Midi.

That doesn’t mean he isn’t enjoying life at Southampton, because he very much is, but he simply likes ‘returning to his roots’ for a bit.

Either way, he’s very happy with the Saints, but he did admit during the course of the interview that it certainly wasn’t easy at first, such was the difference between Ligue 1 (he arrived from Brest) and the Premier League.

He said: “Of course, at the beginning, it was not easy. I was thrown in straight away, and if you think you have the time to realise you are playing in the Premier League… well you haven’t. My first game at Everton, at Goodison Park, I felt like I didn’t know where I was.

“The first 20 minutes went too fast, the atmosphere was crazy. This adaptation time, you need it. It’s a new culture, a new language, a new way of playing, another level. It took me a few months to get the hand of it, to find my habits. Today everything is ok.”

Since joining Southampton, the left-back has appeared 28 times in all competitions, scoring one goal and picking up two assists.
