When Brighton & Hove Albion managed to sign Mahmoud Dahoud on a free from Borussia Dortmund, everyone appeared very chuffed with the coup.
However, it quickly became apparent the midfielder wasn’t going to really fit into Roberto De Zerbi’s plans, as he only featured 14 times for the Seagulls, picking up one assist.
That’s why he ended up searching for a new club in January, with Brighton eventually agreeing to loan out the 28-year-old to VfB Stuttgart in the Bundesliga, where he has already made his mark, scoring against Darmstadt 98 in a nine minute cameo this weekend, which led to him being interviewed by Bild after the game.
It was his first goal in four appearances for the club since leaving the Seagulls and the 14th of his career, which explained his answer when he was asked if he was glad to have scored for the first time in over two years.
He said: “Yes, that was a while ago, but that’s not my main job.”The 28-year-old was signed with an option to buy, showing just how ready Brighton are to part ways with him if they can, hoping that Stuttgart are impressed enough with his performances between now and the end of the season to trigger the clause.
So far so good, with their sports director, Fabian Wohlgemuth, clearly happy with what Dahoud has done to date, saying: “Mo was immediately in the duels, secured balls and scored the important 2-0. The fact that we brought him in has already paid off to a certain extent today.”
