Sunderland fans will certainly remember the long saga of Sebastian Coates. Having failed to impress for the Black Cats after a €2.8m move from Liverpool in in 2015, the club decided to get rid.

That’s why in January 2016, Sunderland loaned Coates to Portuguese side Sporting for one-and-a-half seasons, including a buying option of €5m.

Coates did pretty well at Sporting, and it was quite ridiculous to see that club taking so long to activate the option, which they only did in February this year. It was obvious he was worth it, with Sport Witness pointing out many times it was a bad deal for Sunderland because they should’ve sold for much more.

Well, and it seems we were right. In the past few days, both the Spanish and the Portuguese press have been reporting that Coates is wanted by Valencia.

And as claimed by Jornal de Notícias today, he could end up making a great profit for the Portuguese side. That’s because despite the €45m release clause, the club would be demanding at least €20m during the negotiations.

Sunderland were way too desperate to get rid of Coates, and that’s now obvious.
