A week or so ago Newcastle United were dragged into the ‘chase’ for Marvin Zeegelaar. Sporting are keen to sell the fullback, and even agreed a fee with Norwich City during the January transfer window.

Norwich could have taken the Dutchman to Carrow Road for an agreed fee of just €3.5m, but Zeegelaar wasn’t eager. The reason for rejecting Norwich was reported as him being concerned about the club’s ability to push for Premier League promotion, but money, specifically wages, could have also played a part.

So, given Sporting wanted to sell him in the winter market, so they do again in the summer. Record, a Portuguese newspaper, said Newcastle are now keen, and Sporting had upped their price to €5m.

Nothing had happened between January and June to justify that increase in price, but on the level of what the player would want, Newcastle seemed a better fit.

However, there’s been no offer yet, and Sporting dearly want one. On Saturday, Record once again mention Newcastle as an interested club, and say Zeegelaar isn’t in the plans of manager Jorge Jesus.

If there’s an ounce of truth in Rafael Benitez being keen, then this is all good news. Newcastle could surely do a deal for a similar amount to what Norwich had agreed.

Marvin Zeegelaar is a 26 year old left back who can also play further up if required. His contract with Sporting runs until June 2020.
