On Friday, Catalan newspaper Sport claimed Andre Gomes is close to signing for Tottenham Hotspur.
The player is ‘in favour of’ moving to Spurs ahead of staying at Everton beyond his loan deal, and it was claimed there’s an agreement between Wasserman (Gomes’ agents) and Tottenham that a €30m offer will be made in the coming days.
Given the number of rumours there’s been about Gomes and Spurs, this latest one probably encouraged a lot of eye-rolling. At one time the Barcelona owned player seemed to be the go-to man when a media outlet, in Spain or England, wanted to spice up the end of a Tottenham transfer window.
The assumption to jump to after the claim was that it was either nonsense, or Barcelona were pushing this story to the Catalan media to pressure Everton into a quick deal.
Indeed, the only other serious Spanish outlet going with it is ABC newspaper, they claim Tottenham are ‘willing to bet’ on the player, and a transfer is estimated at €30m… the same figure Sport used.
Sometimes when claims like this are made they quickly disappear into the vaults of the internet, but this one has actually made Sport’s Saturday newspaper.
It should become clear, in the coming days, where to file the report.
