Southampton midfielder Oriol Romeu seems one step from moving back to Spain.

According to Mundo Deportivo, there are ‘practically closed’ negotiations between the Saints and La Liga side Girona.

The outlet points out that Romeu’s contract with Southampton expires in 2023, and with the club afraid of losing him for free next year, that was one of the ‘key issues’ for them to find a deal with the Spanish club.

Otherwise, the deal wouldn’t be possible, as they’d been demanding more than what was on the table.

The midfielder also had a big salary at the St. Mary’s side, and that’s why the negotiations were ‘very complicated’. However, given his wish of moving back to his home country, the 30-year-old ended up agreeing to reduce his wages so he could find a deal with his new club.

Mundo Deportivo adds that at Southampton, Romeu’s departure is ‘already assimilated’, as the club believe this is the ‘end of an era’. They highlight that the player is a ‘leader’ and ‘loved’ by fans, leaving after 256 appearances.
