Southampton continue to be one of the Premier League clubs very interested in the Portuguese transfer market. The club’s scouting of Portugal grew under former Benfica manager Ronald Koeman, and they’re still regulars at matches.
Club officials watched Paços Ferreira’s 1-1 draw against Arouca last Saturday, according to A Bola.
Although Southampton have scouted matches from both clubs this season, they haven’t really been linked to players from either of the sides.
There were three men on the pitch whose performance probably caught the Southampton scouts’ attention. Two of them from Arouca: defensive midfielder André Santos, who scored the equaliser, and winger Kuca, who was brought on in the second half and considerably improved the team’s attack.
On Paços Ferreira’s side, it was Welthon who did really well. The player is currently wanted by Besiktas, who were also at the ground to watch him.
With Premier League club money, it’s not hard to take players from the Portuguese mid-table clubs. Question is: who were Southampton really keeping an eye on?
