To say that Steve Mounié’s initial spell in English football didn’t go to plan would be correct, as the striker’s time at Huddersfield could have gone a lot better.

Bought when the Terriers returned to the Premier League, the striker ended up making 95 appearances for the club, scoring 19 goals and assisting another seven, which included 30 games in the Championship.

However, he could be set to a return to these shores, if journalist Ignazio Genuardi is to be believed, as he claims Sheffield United are interested.

This comes after the Blades returned to the Premier League by finishing second in the second-tier, and are working to bolster their front line ahead of a tough season.

Clearly wanting size and experience, Paul Heckingbottom has targeted Mounié, who is currently at Stade Brestois 29.

With just one year left on his contract there, the forward wouldn’t be the most expensive, and the interest from Sheffield United has caused Brest to look at potential replacements.

Genuardi claims the Ligue 1 side are eyeing Florian Ayé, currently at Brescia and, who could still stay in Serie B despite being relegated because of Reggina potentially being banned from taking part in Italy’s second-tier due to financial irregularities.

It’s worth noting that the player is also the subject of an offer from Metz at this moment in time.

Therefore, if they are relegated to Serie C, Ayé would look elsewhere, and Brest could pounce, leaving the door open for Mounié to move to Sheffield United.

It’s all a bit complicated, but the crux of it all is that Sheffield United are interested in the Benin international ahead of next season.
