The news of Ian Maatsen’s contract extension with Chelsea weren’t very well received in Spain.

As many times reported, Barcelona had been interested in the fullback, as the Catalan side are always attentive to market opportunities and thought they could sign him as a free agent next year.

Now with Chelsea using an option to extend Maatsen’s deal for a year, until 2025, outlet Mundo Deportivo bring some disappointment about the situation.

The outlet writes that with the player not becoming a free agent, his arrival at Barcelona ‘seems almost impossible’.

The Camp Nou side apparently don’t even consider opening negotiations with Chelsea for a transfer fee. It’s said they shall now look for other options for a left-back, searching for ‘attractive’ candidates who can be signed for very little money.

Maatsen has eight appearances for Chelsea this season, and the Blues would obviously not let him leave for free with that clause in their hands. He’s currently valued by Transfermarkt at €20m, and that should be the reason why Barcelona have no hope of his signing.
