As widely reported by the Italian media today, Tottenham Hotspur fullback Destiny Udogie has been a victim of racist abuse on the internet.

It happened when the Municipality of Nogara, the area of Italy where the Spurs player is from, published a Facebook post congratulating the player for his performance against England. There, many readers claimed the youngster is African instead of Italian, among other comments that shouldn’t be repeated.

Now as covered by Calcio Mercato, mayor Flavio Pasini came up with a statement in Udogie’s defence, asking for respect for the Tottenham player.

“Let me be clear: we clearly distance ourselves from any sentence against the colour of Destiny’s skin. Udogie is from Nogara and it is inadmissible to read certain things against a boy who was born and raised in my country and who has realised his dream of making his debut with the blue jersey of Italy.

“I tried to find out who it was who wrote certain phrases and I noticed that those insulting him are not people from Nogara but people who have flocked to our Facebook page to rage for no reason against a good boy, one of ours, of whom we are proud.”

Udogie was born in Nogara, which is located in the province of Verona. He’s been playing for the Italian national team since the U-16 level, and made his way through to the first team, where he he had his two first games in the last international break.

With the player hopefully not harmed by those types of comments, he’s set to be in Tottenham’s squad which faces Fulham at the weekend. So far, he was a starter in all of Spurs’ games in the Premier League this season and has impressed widely, including in his hometown of Nogara… regardless of what some idiots have said.
