Towards the end of the January transfer window, the surprise loan deal taking João Cancelo from Manchester City to Bayern Munich took place.

The defender was getting a bit annoyed at being on the bench under Pep Guardiola, and he felt a change of scenery could do him a lot of good.

Once a key player at Manchester City, the Portuguese saw his stock drop a bit this season, but it appears the move to Bavaria isn’t exactly working out for him either.

While he did start the first two games he was available for, he went on the bench ahead of the game against Borussia Mönchengladbach, and hasn’t returned into Julian Nagelsmann first XI.

He played for 12 minutes against Union Berlin but never made it onto the pitch against VfB Stuttgart (both wins for Bayern Munich), and he will also unlikely be a part of the starting line-up against Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League.

That’s according to Sky Germany journalist Florian Plettenberg, who took to Twitter to say that as things stand, the Manchester City loanee ‘will sit on the bench’ against the Ligue 1 side, with the Croatian Josip Stanisic expected to start at right centre-back in a back three.

It’s said that Nagelsmann sees Cancelo as a classic right-back, but with Bayern now playing three at the back, he has no chance against the likes of Alphonso Davies or Kingsley Coman at wing-back.

As for the player’s take in all this, he is said to be ‘quiet but frustrated’, clearly not expecting to go from the bench at Manchester City to the one at the Allianz Arena.
