For the Newcastle United fans who can dare to look back before the new owners came in, we ask you to cast your way back to the 2013/14 season when the Magpies signed Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa from Montpellier for €8m.

There is a strong argument to say that his move was something of a flop, since he only lasted a year and a half at St James’ Park before being loaned out to AS Roma, who eventually bought him for €7.35m.

The former Newcastle defender then went onto Lyon, where he stayed until July 2020, before leaving and never finding a new club, until this February, as Maritima report he has signed for Istres FC in France.

This comes as a big surprise, since many thought he had retired, but the 34-year-old is now back on the pitch and has already made his first appearance against Lucciana in Corsica, which his team won 2-0.

Speaking to the media, the ex-Newcastle player said: “The project was interesting and I wanted to get back on the pitch. I’m going to bring my experience and transmit it to the young ones. After Lyon, I rested and I made the most of my family and my friends.”

During his time at Newcastle, the centre-back failed to score a goal or register an assist in the 46 appearances he made for the Magpies.
