On June 27th, Tottenham Hotspur completed the signing of Guglielmo Vicario, with the goalkeeper arriving from Empoli.

Before Spurs started negotiations with the Serie A side for the 26-year-old, various claims from the Italian media insisted that Inter Milan had identified the stopper as a target to replace André Onana.

The Nerazzurri had even made an attempt to stop the Italian from moving to Tottenham. That’s according to Empoli president Fabrizio Corsi, who revealed this while on the sidelines at the Fair Play Menarini in Fiesole. His comments are relayed by Calciomercato.

“Inter called me until the last day available with respect to the agreement and the contract of Vicario,” he said.

“We had already received the documents, obviously from correct and respectable people, they only asked me at what point I was and they had the displeasure that things were going in that direction.

“They told me they still needed a few more days, so they told me ‘make your own’ as they say among friends [laughs].”

Inter had plans to replace Onana with Vicario. The Cameroonian is expected to be sold as Manchester United are keen to secure his services in the summer window.

Vicario has already signed a five-year deal at Tottenham. He’s set to be the first-choice goalkeeper for Ange Postecoglou next season, especially after Hugo Lloris expressed his desire to leave the north London club in this window.

Last season, Vicaro kept seven clean sheets and conceded 39 goals from 31 league games.
