Portuguese newspaper Record today features a piece claiming Benfica are already counting on the money from the sale of Darwin Nunez to spend in the transfer window this summer. They’re hoping they can make over €100m from the striker’s departure, as the race for his signing continues to be strong.
Manchester United are once again named as a contender for the the purchase of the Uruguayan, with the Premier League giants now put into a list of three clubs who are the ‘best positioned’ to land the 22-year-old.
Record writes that the Red Devils are along with Paris Saint Germain and Atletico Madrid, all clubs who are strongly searching for a centre-forward this summer.
Especially regarding Manchester United, it’s said manager Erik ten Hag ‘appreciates’ Darwin’s qualities, adding that Edinson Cavani is leaving the club and Marcus Rashford is ‘looking’ for a new destination.
Record insists that Nunez could be Benfica’s biggest sale ever. For that, they need to negotiate his exit for over €120m, which is the price Atletico Madrid paid to sign João Félix in 2019.
That seems unlikely.
It’s said the Eagles, who are negotiating summer arrivals, now wait for the money they’ll receive from the striker’s departure, so they can spend on signings.
Therefore, that could only mean this transfer may be negotiated sooner than expected, and Manchester United and others should move fast to match the Lisbon side’s requests.
