Tottenham Hotspur’s Cristian Romero played 45 minutes in Argentina’s defeat to Paraguay on Thursday.
La Albiceleste manager Lionel Scaloni replaced the centre-back with Marseille’s Leonardo Balerdi after the break.
According to Cadena 3, the Tottenham star was substituted because he ‘was injured’.
The national team manager stated the 26-year-old was unable to return to the pitch in the second half, without providing any further details.
“Balerdi came in because ‘Cuti’ [Romero] couldn’t continue,” he said after the tie, relayed by Cadena 3.
Earlier this month, the defender picked up an injury in Spurs’ 4-1 win over Aston Villa. He didn’t feature in the north London club’s Europa League defeat to Galatasaray.
On Sunday, the former Atalanta man played the full 90 minutes in the league loss against Ipswich Town.
The Copa América winners will host Peru in the World Cup qualifiers next Tuesday [local time]. The Argentina staff will be evaluating Romero’s situation, to find out his availability.
Cadena 3 state it ‘seems difficult’ for the Tottenham player to be involved against Peru. At this moment in time, it’s ‘really unknown’ whether he’ll be fit on time for next clash.
Ange Postecoglou and his side could also keep a close watch on Romero’s situation.
