Javier Manquillo’s decision to leave Newcastle United in January for Celta Vigo has certainly worked out, with him currently the ‘most used’ of the club’s January transfer signings.

That’s according to Marca, who cover the player today and how he’s quickly established himself as a key player under Rafa Benitez.

Manquillo joined the Spanish side in the January transfer window, bringing an end to a seven-year spell at St James’ Park to make the return to his homeland.

He’s been delighted with the move since day one, regularly sharing how happy he and his family are to be back in Spain following an extended time away with the likes of Marseille, Sunderland and then Newcastle.

And it seems part of his happiness is because of the new-found role he’s found at the club, with Marca explaining he is the ‘most used’ of Benitez’s January signings.

They explain that it is clear that Manquillo is ‘in first place’ in Benitez’s favourites list, and the numbers corroborate that.

He joined the club from Newcastle on January 21st and needed a couple of weeks to get fit, making his debut on February 4th and not looking back since.

Since then, he has started in all of the Spanish side’s games, only missing the clash with Barcelona because of a physical discomfort. He’s played four games to date, accumulating 325 minutes, more than he managed in the entirely of last season for Newcastle.

It makes him the most used January signing for Benitez and further justifies the transfer, which has undoubtedly worked out well for him and Celta so far.
