Morocco defender Romain Saïss was ‘unloaded too hastily’ by Wolverhampton Wanderers, and now could be set for a return to one of Europe’s top five leagues following his performances at the World Cup.

Saïss spent six years with Wolves following a €4m move from Angers in 2016, going on to make 206 appearances for the club in all competitions.

He departed Molineux on a free transfer in the summer, with the club electing to let the 32-year-old depart as they sought to reshape their defence for then manager Bruno Lage.

That is a decision they have come to regret as the Portuguese manager’s decision to switch to four at the back did not work out and injuries in defence left them short of numbers and experience.

That regret has only been heightened by watching the defender’s performances at the World Cup, where he has been one of the star men for Morocco in their run to the semi-finals of the competition.

That has seemingly put the defender, who is owned by Besiktas, on the radar of clubs in Europe, who could be ready to move for him.

Corriere Della Sera say that Saïss was ‘unloaded too hastily’ by Wolves and after his performances in Qatar, he is now ‘looking for one last chance’ in a top championship.

Whether he will be given that chance remains to be seen but it seems there is a growing sense that Wolves may regret their decision to release him in the summer.
