Lucky Jose Gimenez gets most of Marca’s page 8 dedicated to him on Thursday. The defender returned to Atletico Madrid for pre-season training on Wednesday, looking every inch like a man walking from a nice summer holiday, all refreshed and tanned.
However, all is not well in the Gimenez aura. Marca once again state that he’s still hurt about missing out on the Champions League. Gimenez had been first choice for Atletico for the majority of the season, but for the final against real madrid, Diego Simeone picked former Manchester City player Stefan Savic.
That hurt Gimenez a great deal, and Marca say he has a thorn in his heart and therefore they report doubts about his future.
The player’s agent is said to be aware of interest from Real Madrid. Atletico would insist any move was only triggered by payment of the player’s €65m release clause.
Gimenez isn’t the only doubt for Atletico, with Lucas Hernandez, another defender, also needing games next season. After a promising season, with appearances against the likes of Barcelona, Hernandez is attracting interest.
The 20 year old Marseille born Frenchman has caught the eye of Manchester City, and could well be an interesting option this summer.
Italian champions Juventus are also interested in a possible deal for the player.
